Nonverbal Communication: Uses for Children with Intellectual Disabilities An Intellectual Disability is when you have an IQ of 70 or less. These children have a lot of difficulties in may aspects of there lives. One of the areas they have the most trouble with is there ability to communicate and understand communication. In the article by McLaughlin and Cascella, they test to see if there is a way to teach six children, ages 8 to 13, with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities, that did not have autism spectrum disorder, verbal speech, significant hearing loss, or challenging behavior how to communicate using digital gestures (2008). The experiment is in two phases, the Pre-Dynamic Assessment and the Dynamic Assessment structured sampling. During the Pre-Dynamic Assessment is individually administered to each participant to measure communicative functions, gesture communication, reciprocity, and symbolic behavior (McLaughlin and Cascella, 2008). Then immediately after the P re-Dynamic Assessment they moved to the Dynamic Assessment which is where the participants are able to learn distal gestures (McLaughlin and Cascella, 2008). The outcome of this experiment was that three of the six participants performed digital gestures and the other three did not. Out of the three that used digital gestures were most often used spontaneously. Also the use of temptation made the use of these digital gestures more common (McLaughlin and Cascella, 2008).
